The Best Australian Yarn hosted by The West Australian, returned for 2024.
Entries opened on the 3rd May, and closed on the 12th August.
The short story competition sees thousands of entries across a range of categories every year, and 2024 was no different.
With $80,000 in prizes up for grabs, authors of all ages and experience levels submitted their short stories with the hopes of getting their stories published and a handy cash prize in their pockets.
A number of categories are available to applicants, to accommodate a diverse range of writing styles.
These included; First Nations Storytelling, Regional Australia, English Second Language, Youth (12-14) and (15-18), Comic Story and even Comic Story Youth.
Authors had just 2,500 words to tell their tale, and entries are now being judged and shortlisted for the final winner announcements.
This year’s overall winner will take home $50,000, with other category winners and runner-up’s sharing the remaining $30,000.
Judging so many entries and so many great stories takes time, and the winner isn’t due to be announced until the end of November this year.
Stay tuned for November to see the winners of this year’s Best Australian Yarn, and remember to give their stories a read once the announcements are made.
If you missed this year’s competition, hang in there for 2025 and start brainstorming some ideas for your own story.
