Partnering for Change: Cultural Awareness Training with Government Health Leaders
At Garlett Group, we’re proud to deliver meaningful and transformative experiences that foster genuine understanding and inclusion. Recently, we had the privilege of partnering with Health Support Services (HSS) to facilitate an engaging and thought-provoking Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Training session for their leadership team.
Led by our expert facilitators, Emma Garlett and Morgan Lyons, the session was designed to be both informative and impactful. By incorporating valuable insights from HSS Aboriginal employees, we ensured the training was not only culturally rich but also tailored to the lived experiences within the HSS workplace.

Throughout the session, leaders explored the practical application of Section 51 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, enhanced their cross-cultural communication skills, and addressed unconscious bias with honesty and openness. Real-life examples and interactive discussions helped create a space of acceptance, reflection, and growth.
One of the most powerful moments came during the Yarning Circle, where participants shared their key takeaways. It was an opportunity to connect on a deeper level, reflect on personal learnings, and reinforce the importance of cultural understanding in leadership.

“We engaged the Garlett Group for Aboriginal Cultural Awareness training for our leaders, Emma and Morgan did a fantastic job delivering the sessions. All participants provided very positive feedback, that they learned about how to ensure effective cross-cultural communication and addressing biases. The examples Emma shared from her lived experience were really helpful in understanding the context”. Uzma Khan, Senior Organisational Development Consultant, Health Support Services
We are incredibly proud of this partnership and look forward to continuing this important journey with HSS. Planning is already underway for additional sessions to ensure all HSS leaders have access to this valuable learning experience.
